California Gold Rush for Kids

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Barbara Feldman On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold in the American River, on the property of his employer John A. Sutter. Despite their efforts to keep this discovery quiet, news soon got out that there was gold in the hills of the River and by August of that year the hillside was covered with tents as men from around the globe, made their way to California to strike it rich. This was no planned event. The Mexican War had only just been won and the Eastern Seaboard was in a state of financial depression. California Governor Richard Barnes Mason declared, “I have no hesitation now in saying, that there is more gold in the country drained by the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers than will pay the cost of the present war with Mexico a hundred times over.” It seemed that the promise of gold was too good to pass up. To begin with, men came from the West. They were already close by, and they were hard working honest and trusting men. Soon however, settlers began to make their way across the country from the East. The gold attracted many outlaws with little respect for the law. Robbery, murder, and conflict with Indians and bandits became common. With the inability of local law enforcement to manage this influx of crime, vigilante groups and lynching became a common form of mob justice. The journey from the East was a hazardous one, more men died of cholera than the feared Indians on that trek across the country. The hard journey however, prepared the men for the harsh conditions of working for the gold. Although there was good money to be made, the cost of living was also high. Few of the prospectors struck it rich, the wise ones become farmers or storekeepers. The largest influx of settlers was in 1849 and hence the settlers were often referred to as “forty-niners”. $10 million dollars worth of gold was found in 1849. This rose to a peak of $81 million in 1852. All in all, over $2 billion dollars worth of gold was taken from the earth before mining became almost dormant. Easiest Hydroponics Feeding Plan

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Jason Willkomm There are many things that can complicate feeding your plants hydroponically. It can be hard enough trying to feed the right strength and right ratios of N-P-K, let alone trying to figure out trace nutrients and secondary nutrients. Once you get past these basics, you must consider plant vitamins, hormones, and keeping everything at the right Ph. If you are just starting out and you only have 20 bucks in your pocket and a teaspoon, this is written for you. I recommend you eventually get a ph meter and a TDS (or EC) meter if you are serious. The first ten days your plants have roots, feed them 400 ppm Maxsea 3-20-20. This is about 1 level teaspoon/gallon of tap water. Add to this 1/4 teaspoon epsom salts for magnesium. After that, feed them 600 ppm Maxsea 16-16-16. This is about 1 rounded teaspoon. To each gallon add 1/4 teaspoon epsom salts. When you are finished with vegatative growth and begin flowering, feed your garden a rounded 1/2 tsp Maxsea 16-16-16 plus a rounded 1/2 tsp Maxsea 3-20-20 in each gallon of water. Be especially sure to add 1/4 tsp epsom salts to each gallon through the flowering stage. I used to switch to straight Maxsea 3-20-20 at this point, but most plants look a little nitrogen deficient by the end. Feed your garden in this way for two weeks, while the plants transition from vegatative growth to flowering. After the transitioning period, feed your garden 800 ppm Maxsea 3-20-20 until you near the end of flowering. This is about 2 level teaspoons per gallon. Make sure to add 1/4 tsp epsom salts to each gallon. The very last 10 to 14 days before you harvest, you will want to feed your garden only plain water. Flushing you garden will remove excess nutrient salts from the plant tissue and will improve the aroma and flavor of your garden produce. Seaweed additives are a popular choice when it comes to trace nutrients and plant hormone supplements. Since Maxsea fertalizers are seaweed based fertalizers, these benefits are built in and no additional supplements are required for these two things. When you mix up Maxsea in a nutrient solution, it is a nearly perfect Ph. What’s more, the Ph is stable in solution for many days. This is great for the beginning hydroponics gardener. This means you can get away without the initial cost of an expensive Ph meter in the beginning. By carefully measuring the fertalizer when you mix up the nutrient solution, you can get away without the initial cost of an expensive TDS meter or EC meter as well. The best advice here would be to always top off your nutrient reservoir with 1/2 strength solution whenever it is a little low. Every two weeks, start over with fresh water and nutrients to avoid a nutrient imbalance in your solution. The completeness of Maxsea offers you a very simple feeding plan. Between the two formulas (16-16-16 and 3-20-20) it is easy to provide a good balance of N-P-K for any stage of growth. Even so, if you carefully read the fertalizer ingredients, you will find Maxsea is missing one thing… magnesium. By adding 1/4 teaspoon epsom salts/gallon, you inexpensively avoid having any problems with a magnesium deficiency. Finally, Maxsea costs considerably less than high quality professional hydroponics fertalizers, and will give you excellent results just the same. This is especially true when you begin buying the different hydroponic fertalizer parts, and the separate plant hormone additives, and the Ph meter and TDS meter to properly maintain the solutions. So, for a simpler way that also saves you money, keep this page mind. The Definition Of Asset Management

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Robert Michael Many of you have probably heard the term “asset management” Before, but you may not have an idea of what it really is. Asset management is a broad term. It can be defined as a process that guides the gaining of assets, along with their use and disposal in order to make the most of the assets and their potential throughout the life of the assets. While doing this, it also manages and maintains any costs and risks associated with the assets. It is not something you can buy, but rather a discipline you must follow in order to maintain your assets. Asset Management can be used for a variety of things. Most use asset management to keep track of their cash or “liquid assets.” Banking institutions are considered a form of asset management (savings accounts, CD’s, mutual funds, money market accounts, etc.) along with investments. Another example of assets: businesses often have a product to sell. These products are considered assets. The right asset management system can be utilized to make the product more readily available, easier to produce, cheaper to ship to customers, etc. Asset Management Resource: Tracking and insuring the product is also a way of asset managagemant. The product is an asset to the business and essential for its survival and for financial stability. So, maintaining and managing this product is of the up most importance. There is another type of asset that many people do not think of when they think of the term “asset management.” This asset has to do with public and shared assets such as: the building and maintaining of streets, highways, water treatment facilities, sewage, electricity, natural gas, clean air, etc. All of these are assets that everyone on this earth needs. Usually, your city or local government uses asset management to maintain the cost of these assets. They also use it to produce some of these assets more effectively and in a more cost efficient manner. Natural resources such as: water, electricity, and natural gas are managed so that they can be renewed constantly and thus available inexpensively. Asset Management Resource: There are many different means of asset management. It often depends on what type of asset is involved. There are companies and software products available to assist in asset management. Whatever method you choose, there are many similar things that your asset manager system should entail: 1. Optimize asset use and manage all maintenance efforts involved by making assets as accurate, reliable, and efficient as possible. 2. Reducing the demand for new assets and thus save money by using demand management techniques and maintaining current assets. 3. Uses a form of asset tracking: knowing where the asset is at all times, how much the asset is worth, and how much the asset cost you to begin with. It should also incorporate this throughout the entire life of the asset. 4. Always tries to achieve greater value for money through evaluating the asset options: the cost of maintaining, producing, the use of it, etc. 5. Always provides a report on the value of the assets, along with any costs involved in maintaining the assets. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the many forms of asset management. There are so many different things that can be defined as assets, thus there are so many different means of asset management. Now that you understand it a bit, you can decide what your assets are and how you can maintain them better in order for them to be more advantageous for you! What You Need To Get Yout Indoor Garden Started

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Mike Hirn Many people take great pleasure in their gardens, though they are usually situated outside. Some gardeners, however, take part in another form of gardening, and thats indoor gardening. Indoor gardening offers some perks that you cant get from outdoor gardening. However, just as there are perks, there are also drawbacks. This article will examine both. You will also find places to situate your indoor garden, what types of flowers and plants you can grow, as well as some gardening tips to help your indoor garden flourish. Why Plant Indoors? Many people dont realize that planting indoors can be more beneficial to plants, but it is also a lot of work. Indoor gardening is more beneficial because you, the gardener, get to control the environment, the weather, what foods and nutrients your plants receive, and anything else that you would normally have to trust to nature. Probably the best advantage to indoor gardening is that you can keep pests at bay easier when your garden is set indoors. The Drawbacks The drawbacks to indoor gardening are that you have to be very observant as to the needs and desires of your plants. As you get more experienced, you will be able to tell exactly what your plants need just by looking at them. For instance, by seeing the leaves or flowers change a certain color, you can tell if a certain chemical is depleted from its roots or soil. You have to keep a constant watch, however, as you dont have the benefit of nature to nurture your plants. Instead of the rain, you have to water your indoor garden yourself. Instead of sunlight, you have provide the lighting yourself and you also have to provide all the nutrients that your plants or flowers will require. This means that, probably the biggest drawback to indoor gardening, you have to put up a lot of the cost up front. You have to buy the lighting, such as high powered sodium bulbs, which produce light equivalent to that of the sun and that are beneficial for growing plants. They arent cheap, however, and neither are all of the other materials you may need. To start, you will need the equipment, of course, but you also need to determine which types of plants you want to grow. The best indoor gardening plant is the cactus, as it doesnt require much care, such as constant watering, and it can be maintained easily. The cactus is a great plant to practice with until you get better and can move on to other plants and flowers. You can also visit your local garden center and ask the associate about proper garden design, what you will need as well as where you should place it, such as on your patio or in your house. If you have a green thumb, then this should be an easy venture for you. If you dont know much about gardening, however, you should probably stick to an outside garden before you attempt your hand at indoor gardening. Mike Hirn has been a long time gardening enthusiast. Teen Hairstyle Ideas

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Matt Garrett Teens are fond of saying “Oh, that’s so last year (or last month or last week), and they are always looking for the newest, cool teen hairstyle ideas to suit their wardrobes. Teen hairstyle ideas are not so different from adult hair styles, except that they may be a bit more bold and change frequently. The best teen hairstyle ideas are for those “dos” that can be changed often; a teenager will want to wear her hair sedu straight one day like Jennifer Anniston, and sport curly locks the next. Therefore, it is a good idea to incorporate teen style ideas into a teen lifestyle which is active and often in flux. Teen hairstyles ideas should be quick, easy and not too elaborate. However, this is always Homecoming and the prom, so teen hairstyle ideas to fit formal occasions are always needed. Most teens are active with jobs, classes and extra-curricular activities, so a style that requires a lot of maintenance is usually not the best for a teen (unless she enjoys spending a large amount of time doing her hair). There are some great teen hairstyle ideas for short hair. Layered short hair can create a spikey look when combined with a sculpting gel. The spikey look is great for emphasizing highlights and frosted touches, but it is best to have these added by a professional or to put on temporary coloring. Simply work gel into freshly shampooed hair, blowdry the hair and use a teasing comb or your fingers to create spikes. The same hairstyle can look softer with a bit of mousse instead of gel and by blowdrying the hair with a standard brush. Another favorite among teen hairstyle ideas is the bob.It is quite versatile, easy to maintain and can be formal or casual, depending on how it is styled. Your bob can be made completely straight with a sedu iron, or curled at the bottom and around the bangs with a short-barrelled curling iron. Bobs can have bangs or be styled in all-one-length with funky hair jewelry to keep the side hairs from falling into the face. A sleek bob can be an elegant look for prom. You will need: A super shine shampoo and conditioner Shampoo your hair and use conditioner Rinse out the conditioner and follow with a cool rinse to bring out the shine Use sculpting gel to style your bob Blow dry your hair on a low setting to prevent the style from “flying out” Finish with a hair spray that will bring out the sheen in your hair. Many teen hairstyle ideas are designed to recreate the look of a popular celebrity. The straight Jennifer Anniston look is “in” and is easy to achieve, even for those with naturally curly hair. A sedu iron is the best tool or creating super straight hair, and the best flat irons have ceramic plates that minimize damage to the hair. You will need to: Shampoo and condition the hair. Using an excellent conditioner will help your hair fall straight brush mousse through your wet hair Blowdry hair using a paddle brush work the flat iron through your hair in one inch wide sections Brush your hair straight and finish with hairspray Of course, teen hairstyle ideas should include great prom looks. Updos are quite popular for the big evening, but they are not just for long hair. If you hair is long enough to put in a small ponytail, you can create a great updo. Even if your hair is shorter, you can get a matching hair extension to make your hair appear longer. To create a Reese Witherspoon-style chignon: Shampoo and condition your hair the day before. Freshly-shampooed ponytails are more difficult to work with Smooth your hair back into a ponytail, making sure that the sides are smooth. Use an elastic that is the same shade as your hair. Make sure your ponytail is low, falling to the nape of your neck Divide your pony into three sections. Curl each section with a curling iron. Fasten with bobby pins until the curls cool Once the curls are cool, brush out the curls lightly. Take the pony and tuck it into the elastic Arrange your chignon, and fix the sides of your hair. If you want them completely smooth, spray your hair, or tease out a few tendrils and curl them with a curling iron. Eye Make Up Concealer

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Josh Riverside Eyes speak volumes when it comes to beauty and make up. Therefore, a perfect eye make up can work wonders in accentuating the beauty and expression of the eyes and contribute to the overall appeal. As the name suggests, eye make up concealer typically conceals the blemishes of the skin around the eye and works as a base foundation at the same time. The formulation of an eye make up concealer is denser than the regular foundations and if applied properly produces a perfect and flawless complexion. They are available in creams, tubes, and sticks, and are rich in vitamins that help not only in lightening the skin tone but also in evening out the skin texture. The best concealer is supposed to be the one that is not soluble in water. Just as the eye shadow, it is also essential for a concealer to match with the skin complexion and needs to be applied inside the nose-bridge and outer corners of the eyes. The concealer is required to be spread over the area gently so that it does not come into the grooves of the fine lines around the eye, which might cause an unnatural effect because of the congealing nature of a concealer. To test the suitability of the concealer according to the skin tone, individuals can apply some on the blue veins of the hands and if the vein is no longer seen, it proves that the concealer is ideal for the individual. Mixing the concealer with the foundation or an eye cream can further help in blending the make up colors and reflect a smooth skin. Based on what an individual wants to conceal, they can select the concealer accordingly. While a color correcting concealer is effective to reduce the redness around the eye area, a yellow concealer is ideal for concealing bluish tinges. For reducing dark circles, individuals may opt for cream based concealer with a shade lighter than yellow. To hide a scar or cover a birthmark, thick opaque concealer can be the best solution, whereas medicated concealer are prescribed for covering pimples. The Tools You’ll Need for Gardening

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Bill McRea Different kinds of gardens require different kinds of garden tools. Hardware stores mostly cater for a wide range of tools, but there are shops that specialize in the more expensive kind of garden tool that shouts quality. Wherever you decide to shop, here are a few pointers to advise you. Do you have small garden or a large one? A small garden will not require the same large equipment that would be of use in an extensive one. A ride-on mower is unnecessary if you only have a small strip of lawn. Another point to consider is who does most of the gardening? Some tools are too heavy for use by women. When you buy secateurs make sure the blade always stays sharp to avoid damaging the plant. Look for models that have blades that can be sharpened or replaced, models with tension control and with sizes that best fit your hands. Secateurs usually cost around $50 - $130. Hedge trimmers or shears are handy - but only if you have a hedge, or plan on growing one. Some hedge trimmers have curved blades to stop branches from sliding out when cut. Forks are used for turning and aerating compost and breaking up lumps of soil. The cheaper ones are often not strong enough for heavy soil, so go for sturdiness instead of price. Forks usually cost around $30 - $100. A shovel has a scoop blade and is best used to move around dirt and garden soil. A spade has a flat blade great for cutting edges, digging and dividing plants. The edge of a spade should be kept sharpened for clean and efficient cutting will cause the least amount of damage to plants. These are a basic garden necessity and usually cost from $30 - $50. A pruning saw is used for pruning trees and larger shrubs, while secateurs are for plants like roses. Pruning saws have a narrow curved blade that fits between stems or branches and easily and cuts them as you pull the saw backwards. They are approximately $27- $55. A chipping hoe is a handy tool for getting rid of small weeds. The Dutch or push-hoe is slightly more user-friendly as the action required to use it does not jar the neck and shoulder quite so much. A rake is also a basic requirement for the garden. The strong rake with the flat head and sharp metal prongs is used for smoothing a garden bed and getting out the last of the bumps and weeds. The plastic rake is used to gather leaves and grass clippings only. Gardening tools don’t have to be expensive you should check out on line stores as well ass flea markets and garage sales. Bill McRea is the publisher of Garden Facts also Garden Decor and Landscape Trees Landscaping and Gardening with information and products. Jewlry - Better than Tiffany’s

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Lorna Findlay Jewelry is a multi-million dollar industry, with a number of companies selling diamond necklaces and engagement rings in every mall in America. You can join this industry-maybe not with precious metals and jewels-but certainly by making high-fashion pieces that you can wear with pride. Jewelry making is a great craft project for any crafter, but you need the right tools and supplies to get started. The best investment you can make if you want to begin making your own jewelry is a kit. Kits will include the tools you need to get started, like a needle-nosed pliers and clasps. It is important to realize that beads are just part of what you need in the order of supplies. You’ll also need chains for necklaces and bracelets, backings for earrings, posts to create anything that dangles, and supplies to link it all together. This can be quite pricey, so watch when your craft store has a sale on jewelry supplies and stock up with the necessities. You should also be able to buy kits that include all of these supplies. Beads are, of course, most fun to buy when it comes to making jewelry. Beads are made from a variety of things, such as metal, glass, clay, plastic, and even wood. You can make your own beads too, if you enjoy working with polymer clay. When shopping for beads, look for a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors so that you can make a number of different designs with your jewelry. Putting the jewelry together can be difficult without another tool-a magnifier. Using a magnifying glass probably won’t work well, since you’ll need both hands to work on the jewelry, but you can by magnifiers on headsets that you can move in and out of your line of vision as you need it, or you can use standing magnifiers to work on your projects. These magnifying tools will help your eyes stay strong and keep you from becoming too frustrated. When you’re working with jewelry, use a flat surface so that your beads don’t roll around. You can cover anything that is too smooth with felt to prevent rolling beads as well. Jewelry ideas can come from a number of sources, and you may be surprised to find how easily you can mimic some of the top designers. You can make pieces to match every outfit you own and nobody will ever guess that you did this craft yourself! Visit TheGreatBigCraftShop.com for all your craft supplies and accessories.
