Spotting Fake Antique Furniture

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Michael Russell If you love antique furniture, but you are not an expert, you are probably hounded by the fear of buying a fake. Your fear is shared in the antique-buying community; even experts and auction houses get fooled into buying fakes every now and then. There are several ways to protect your money and your reputation by observing the following recommendations made by antique furniture collectors and sellers. Before you buy a number of pieces from a time period, it is advised to work only with a reputable furniture dealer. Take the time to visit old houses, antique fairs and museums too see good quality pieces until you get a “gut” feeling for the period’s style and furniture design. Many long time collectors will tell you that their best furniture buys did not come at bargain prices; you still get what you paid for. Be wary of a bargain. Unless you are an expert, the piece is too good to be true if the price is. So if you see a piece that is extremely cheap or under priced, warning bells should ring in your head and handle the transaction with caution. Dealers do not usually put wrong prices on their items, so getting a bargain is quite unlikely. Read up on the current market values of the items you are looking at. Fakes are not always cheap; in fact, they can be priced at the same level as the real ones to project credibility. But if the dealer cuts the price by a rather large percentage, like selling a $1000 chair for $700, look at the item very carefully and be sceptical. Don’t be fooled by stories that begin with “a little old lady”. Ownership stories like this must be taken with a grain of salt. If you buy antiques at a furniture fair, look around the fair first before buying the piece. If you see a number of similar pieces around, you might be getting a fake. With furniture, some sellers will keep the “antique” part, like the tabletop, but replace the legs to complete the entire “antique” table. Take time to inspect the item thoroughly and stand back to take the entire piece into view. Take a good look at the joints, handles and the marks on the furniture. If there are marks that look out of place, too fresh, or in hard-to-reach areas like the inside of a dresser, be careful. Always take note of how the piece is supposed to be used and where normal marks should be. If any mark looks unexpected, you are better off not buying the piece. Dirt and grime should be where they are expected to be. If there is no dust in the difficult to reach areas of a tabletop, you know something is amiss. The wear should be uneven and varies with different pieces. Some have any scars and others hardly have marks. If you do decide to replace a broken part of the piece, like a handle or leg, remember that this will depreciate the piece’s value. Remember that furniture pieces in their original pristine condition are extremely scarce and expensive. Remember to inspect the underside of the furniture. If these hidden sides have been cleaned, stained, painted, or lacquered when they shouldn’t be, do not buy the item. All these guidelines may be overwhelming and it looks like to takes away a lot of the joy in furniture collecting. But it is still good to know that many antique dealers are not crooks and many share your passion too and wouldn’t want to destroy their own reputations by selling fakes. After purchasing, get a proper receipt that includes the date of the piece, the details and a certificate that describes the antique thoroughly. Know Thyself: The Pitta Body Type Needs Extra Cooling Down: Learn About Yourself with Ayurveda

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Helen Thomas PITTA is composed of fire and water; fire, the main element, is contained within the protective waters of the body (such as digestive enzymes). It governs your metabolismbody processes involving heat, digestion, and hormones, and biochemical reactions such as those required to produce energy. Hyperacidity, hot flashes, inflammation in joints, all point to too much pitta. When pitta predominates, a person tends to be fiery: intense, with a sharp and creative mind, a penetrating look in their eyes, a reddish or easily flushed complexion, a competitive streak, and a hot temper. Their illnesses are related to inflammation, such as heartburn, ulcers, skin rashes, anger, and irritation. Your pitta is aggravated if you… Have inflamed, irritated skin rashes or hives Have whiteheads Have stomach problems such as acid stomach, heartburn, or ulcer Wake up frequently and can’t go back to sleep, have disturbing dreams, or night sweats Have bad breath Are very sensitive to heat and get hot flashes Get bloodshot eyes easily Have a sour body odor Feel weakness due to low blood sugar Experience food allergies Get angry, irritable, hostile Feel impatient and get frustrated easily Are critical of yourself and others Argue with others Are aggressive, bossy, and controlling I blow my nose and litttle specks of blood are present. Too much pitta.I have moles, skin irritations, too much pitta.I get so hungry I feel like I am going to faint or go beserk if I do not eat. Again, too much Pitta.Whats’ too much pitta? Simply put, over production of gastric juices. What gastric juices , you ask? Hydro cholric acid(HCL), mucus and pepsinogen. The Pitta diet and other pitta pacifying practices will remedy these symptoms. Copyright Dr.Helen Thomas 2007. The Health Benefits of Aromatherapy

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Niclas Ericsson The use of fragrances for the well-being of man dates back to pre-historic times. Oils and incense have been used for thousands of years to calm nerves, heal wounds, achieve a higher mental state and even to call for the attention of deceased relatives. Although modern science can’t prove that aromatherapy will bring back the dead, there is no doubt about the effect on the human psyche. Everyday, millions of people are made to feel better by the burning of incense sticks, scented candles and other ways to enjoy the large variety of fragrances available. The term aromatherapy was coined in 1928, when French chemist R. Gattefoss, by a stroke of bad luck (or luck as it turns out), accidentally burned himself on the hand in his lab and instinctively put his hand into a bowl of lavendar oil in order to reduce the pain. He noticed that the burn wound healed very quickly and left almost no scarring. From then on he devoted his life to investigating the healing benefits of essential oils. For the last decades the physical healing powers of aromatherapy has been somewhat pushed aside in favour of the effects on the human mind. Some fragrances can reduce stress, others can help over-coming a depression. Lavendar, bergamot, roses and violets, for example are said to get rid of nervousness. Peppermint will make you happy, and so on. We all know the power that smell can have on our mind. Meeting someone for the first time in a place that stinks might make you actually dislike the person you are seeing, even if the foul smell does not originate from him or her. And if it wasn’t for the power our noses have over our logical brain we wouldn’t be spending billions of dollars on perfume and eau de cologne each year. Seeing a photo from your daughter’s wedding might make you remember the actual events that took place on that day, but smelling a drop of rose oil will actually take you back to the state of mind you had then. You can re-live the moment of happiness over and over again. So how do you go about taking advantage of the healing powers of aromatherapy? First of all, you must decide for what you want to use it. If you have an important exam tomorrow, you probably need something that will calm your nerves. Then orange or coriander could be a good choice. If a loved one just passed away your grief can be relieved by bergamot or jasmine. Your local health store should be able to assist you in selecting the best fragrance for you. The next thing to decide is what method of dispersion you want to use. There are incense sticks, essential oils and scented candles. Which one you use is up to you, although oils are probably the most versatile of the three. Oils can be vaporized, rubbed onto the skin or put into the bathtub, all according to your preference. The third and final thing to do is… well.. take a deep breath through your nose and relax! Wedding Tips - Beautiful Hair, Beautiful Bride

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By L Hayes One of the most challenging decisions you will face after choosing your wedding gown is your style of hair. Keep in mind that while you might have thought you wanted to wear your hair up, but once you choose your dress, this might no longer be the best option. Here are a few tips on how to choose the perfect wedding hairstyle. It’s a good idea to start by having several hairstyle choices in mind so you can coordinate with the theme of the wedding, along with style of the gown. One of the best ways to gain ideas on hairstyles is by looking through glamour type magazines, bridal magazines, or even visiting with the stylist that will actually create the style for you. As mentioned, the style of the wedding gown should play an important role in the hairstyle. As an example, if you decide to go with a princess ball gown, then soft, flowing ringlets would be gorgeous. However, if the wedding gown is an off the shoulder or backless design, then wearing your hair up might be most appropriate. Another important decision is the stylist you select. If you plan to be married locally, chances are you have a favorite stylist, but the key here is to make sure this person knows how to create styles for weddings. In other words, just because a stylist is talented in coloring or cutting hair, he or she may not have the appropriate skill in creating wedding hairstyles. If your wedding is a ‘destination wedding’, out of state or country, it is important to take photographs of what you want before trying to find someone at that location. Unfortunately, many brides make a common mistake in using the wedding day as a time of experiment. It’s normally not a good idea to make major changes to your hair regarding a permanent or coloring until after the wedding date. In addition, having too much done on your hair within six months before the wedding could cause damage to the hair. If you plan to wear your hair up, avoid having the top layers of your hair colored or highlighted. Although this coloring is gorgeous when your hair is down, once worn up, the two- or three-tone coloring will look odd. If your hair is thin, then talk to your hair stylist about adding clip-on extensions to create volume or length. Typically, a bride wants something special or unique for her wedding day, which is fine, but be careful not to go too over the top. Finally, have your hair stylist try various styles months prior to your wedding. This way, the stylist will have the opportunity to practice, getting the look exactly as you want. In addition, having various styles created ahead of time allows you the chance to make changes or adjustments if need be. L Hayes is a wedding professional and owner of Wedding Favors Emporium. The Five-Fold Ministry: Part One

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Michael Tummillo Part 1: Historically-speaking As a child, I spent a few years living in a town called Zion in northeast Illinois. In recent years, I’ve done some research on the town and discovered that quite a few evangelists and ministers from America’s past actually hailed from that small town as well, or had some sort of “Zion Connection.” Gordon Lindsay, the founder of Christ for the Nations institute, Dallas, Texas, was from Zion. So was Finis Jennings Dake of Dake’s Bible fame. Jerry Jenkins, co-Author of the popular “Left Behind” series is from Zion. John G. Lake’s ministry was jump-started there when his wife was actually healed by Zion’s founder, John Alexander Dowie, a Congregational minister who founded and oversaw the Christian Catholic Church, established in 1896. In 1901, with 5,000 followers, Dowie established the City of Zion and ran the town as a Puritan theocracy. In 1904, he revealed that he had been Divinely commissioned to be the First Apostle and told his followers to anticipate the full restoration of apostolic Christianity. Many thought Dowie was nuts after this and, in 1906, the believers in the Zion community began to diminish. Dowie passed away the following year. According to author Frank Viola in his article on the five-fold Ministry, “In 19th century England, Christians were ripe to flock to apocalyptic prophecies about the coming Millennial Age. The upheaval that the French Revolution had produced left Gods people wishing for a reign of peace under their Lord that would set all things right. In the year 1824, Edward Irving, a Presbyterian pastor in Scotland, began teaching that the five-fold ministry of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers had disappeared from the church and were in need of restoration. According to Irving, the restoration of these ministries would usher in the Millennial Kingdom of Christ on the earth. As a result of Irvings teachings, he and his followers began the Catholic Apostolic Church in 1832. Its chief purpose was to restore the five-fold ministry and usher in the Millennial Kingdom. The church ordained twelve apostles who were to be the last days equivalent of the original Twelve whom Jesus appointed. Henry Drummond, a wealthy banker from England, became the leader of the church. Drummond himself took the highest position . . . the apostle to Scotland.” It was prophesied that these twelve apostles would be the last apostles to appear on the earth before Christs return. (This is a throwback to Mani of Persia of the third century who labeled himself the Apostle of Light, the very last apostle of Jesus to exist on the earth.) Eventually these twelve apostles died (the last one dying in 1901). Upon their death, the Catholic Apostolic Church died in England. In Germany, however, the Catholic Apostolic Church ordained twelve more apostles and took the name New Apostolic Church.” After Dowie’s “Heaven on Earth” in Illinois went up in smoke (the town still exists by the way - Go, ZeeBees!), and following the Azusa Street outpouring in Los Angeles, many Christians began to ponder what was being referred to as the five-fold ministry and the mighty “outpouring of the Holy Spirit that would usher in the return of Christ. Sound familiar? In his article, Viola goes on to describe historical movement after movement whereby new generations of apostles appeared on the scene, supposedly to restore the five-fold ministry to the earth. The churches involved in these apostolic movements were charismatic in nature offering the same ol’ fare from edifice to edifice, era to era. Even today, they include the same 500 year-old order of worship, the office of “pastor” (often referred to as apostle), nurseries, well-rehearsed singers, and ridiculously high overhead. Yawn. Nothing new under the sun, is there? What IS the five-fold ministry? It’s based upon the “ascension gifts” referred to in Ephesians 4:8,11 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men…And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers…” The five-fold ministry is based upon the doma gifts, the ascension gifts. The word doma comes from the Greek word “gifts” used in Ephesians 4:8. These doma gifts did not come into the Church until Jesus ascended (hence the term “ascension gifts”). Before this time, there were apostles, prophets, and teachers, but they were not doma gifts to the Church; they were gifts from the Old Covenant. Though I’m already aware that this message will step on some delicate theological toes, and I’m also aware there are many Christians who will remain clueless as to what this subject is all about, all I’m asking is that you read it, weigh it, pray about it, and extend grace if you disagree. If this treatise proves to be a revelation to anybody, the individuals who accept it and receive it as truth are bound to experience a brand new, deeper level of fulfillment in ministry than they EVER imagined was possible. All I know is that the so-called “restoration of the five-fold ministryhas apparently been occurring off and on for over 180 years, has been warmed-over continually, failed to ever fully materialize (and with good reason as you will see), and has been repeatedly repackaged for different target audiences. 13 Valentine’s Day Gifts That Cost Less Than 1 Cent

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Sheryl Kurland 1. In the morning, tuck a love note in his pocket or her pocketbook or other certain-to-be-found spot. Jot down some meaningful words on a piece of paper Cant wait to wrap my arms around you tonight!; Whats for dessert?; You make me happy every day! and tuck it in a conspicuous location to be easily discovered during the day. 2. Take a 15-minute break during work just to call and say I love you. (You can text message or email, too.) Keep the conversation 100% positive. This means that any discussion about bills appointments, children, chores, problems, etc., is off limits. 3. Sprinkle 3 compliments throughout the day. In our fast-paced world, we tend to neglect some of the simplest ways to make each other feel good. During the day, think of a few sincere compliments to give your mate. They are probably right in front of you, but you just failed to verbalize them. Today is the day! 4. Let go of grudges and replace them with forgiveness. Anger is a wasteful emotion and saps us of a lot of emotional energy. Besides, most of the things we get angry about with our partner are petty. Flush away the negative thoughts and memories that are driving a wedge between you and your mate. Then, use the freed-up energy on ways to strengthen and enhance your relationship. 5. Enjoy the great outdoors. Together, go for a walk, jog or bike ride. Depending on weather conditions and where you reside, go ice skating or roller-blading. Do whatever outdoor activities you both take pleasure in (and that are free). 6. Make a creative dinner together. Gather food items from the refrigerator, freezer and pantry. Create a delicious meal and some interesting concoctions using ingredients you already have at home. Dine slowly and savor the cuisine as well as each others company. 7. Never, ever, miss a good chance to shut up. Every comment doesnt need a retort. Every issue doesnt need another opinion. Speak up when its important. Keep your lips zipped when it isnt. What you dont say is often as important as what you do say. 8. Express appreciation for the things he/she does for you. In established relationships, we tend to live in the mode of automatic pilot. You cover certain responsibilities and your mate has designated responsibilities. Doing them is part of nurturing the relationship, signs of thoughtfulness and caring. When was the last time you said thank you? 9. Break the mold by creating new routines and habits. Behavior can become so predictable that the relationship is monotonous. This isnt a sign of failure, but rather, its time to make some changes. Change can be invigorating. Sit down together and brainstorm all the crazy, absurd and ridiculous ideas each of you can think of to modify old patterns. Then review your list and identify those that are useful, creative solutions to spice up the partnership. 10. Start a couple tradition. Traditions add excitement to a relationship and keep the two of you connected. They also serve as an anchor and provide glue for the union to remain sturdy when the going gets rough. On this Valentines Day, establish a few traditions that will make your relationship more special year after year after year. 11. Make the homecoming irresistible. Upon arrival home from work, dont run to set up your computer or pick up the phone to make a few quick calls to take care of loose ends. Instead, embrace your loved with a generous 30-second hug. Youll be amazed at how well a big, warm hug melts away stress and fatigue of the day. 12. Have a 15-minute kissing session and try some new ways and places to kiss. The same old smoocheroo can get boring. Use your imaginationand perhaps a little whipped cream. 13. Before falling asleep in bed together, share some giggles. What funny things happened to you today? What not-so-funny things happened that are worth chuckling about now? For most of us, not a day goes by that we dont make a silly mistake. What was it? Laughter is good for you and for the relationship. Share your stories and some laughs. Then hold hands and fall peacefully asleep. Get a Cheap Credit Card By Understanding The Fees

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder Credit card companies charge fees of some sort or another. The key is to find a card with the lowest fees for the services you use. For instance, if you use cash advances, then investigate those fees with credit card companies before you sign up with them. Upfront Fees Not every credit card program has upfront fees, so it pays to shop around for the right card. For instance, annual fees are common on cards with fixed or low rates. In the right circumstance, this fee with the right rate can save you money. You will also find cash advance fees, either a flat rate or percentage. Not all cards charge this, but usually they have higher APRs. It is important to read the terms if you plan on using this feature. Balance-transfer fees also can be charged, usually when you use a check sent by the credit card company. Some programs offer no fees or low rates for transfers, especially with an introductory offer. Extra Fees Extra fees can often be avoid but should still be researched. Late payment, over-the-credit-limit, or credit increase can all result in extra dollars. Less common are set-up, return item, or telephone ordering fees. Unless a card is offering an exceptional rate, these types of programs should be avoided. Low Fees Equal High Rates - Sometimes While no one wants to pay fees, sometimes they can save you money. With large balances or balance transfers, you can often find lower rates by paying a small fee. You may also find that with incentive programs, a monthly fee will still allow you to come out ahead. However, for those that pay off their balances every month, choose a card with no or low fees. You can also choose to have a couple of different types of credit card programs to meet your different financing needs. Research Fees Under federal law, credit card companies are required to list fees and APRs before you apply. Often the information will be present in a table. It will include annual, minimum finance, cash advance transaction, transfer, late payment, and over-the-credit-limit fees. With this information, you can decide what card is best for you. Occasionally, patients may presents with hemoptysis or chest pain. Other systemic symptoms include anorexia, fatigue, or night sweats. * Tuberculous meningitis: Patients may present with a headache that is either intermittent or persistent for 2-3 weeks. Subtle mental status changes may progress to coma over a period of days to weeks. Fever may be low-grade or absent. * Skeletal TB: The most common site of a involvement is thae spine (Pott disease). Symptoms include back pain or stiffness. Lower extremity paralysis occurs in as many as half the patients with undiagnosed Pott disease. Tuberculous arthritis usually involves only 1 joint. Although any point may be involved, the hip of the knee is affected most commonly, followed by the ankle, elbow, wrist, hip or the knee is affected most commonly, followed by the ankle, elbow wrist and shoulder. Pain may precede radiographic changes by weeks to months. * Genitourinary TB: Reported symptoms include flank, pain, dysuria, or frequency. In men, genital TB may present as epididymitis or a scrotal mass. In women, genital Tb may mimic pelvic inflammatory disease. TB causes approximately 10% of sterility in women worldwide and approximately 1% in industrialized countries. * Gastrointestinal TB: Any site along the gastrointestinal tract may become infected. Symptoms are ferable to the site infected, to include the following: nonhealing ulcers of the mouth or anus; difficulty swallowing with esophageal disease; abdominal pain mimicking peptic ulcer disease with stomach or duodenal infection; malabsorption with infection of the small intestine; and pain, diarrhea, hematochezia with infection of the colon. * Tuberculosis lymphadenitis (scrofula): The most common site is in the neck along the sternocleidomastoid muscle. It usually is unilateral. It usually is unilateral, with little or no pain. Advanced disease may suppurate and form a draining sinus. * Cutaneous TB: Direct inoculation may result in an ulcer or wartlike lesion. Contiguous spread from an infected lymph node typically results in a draining sinus. Hematogeneous spread may result in a reddish brown plaque on the face or extremities (lupus vulgaris) or tender nodules or abscesses. Physical: Finding upon physical examination depend on the organs involved. * Patient with pulmonary TB have abnormal breath sounds, especially over the upper lobes or areas invovled. * Sign of extrapulmonary TB differ depending on the tissues involved. Signs may include confusion, coma, neurologic deficit, chorioretinitis, lymphadenopathy and cutaneous lesions (as described above). * Postnatal TB is contraced via the airbone route. The most common findings are adenopathy and a lung infiltrate. However, the chest radiography findings can be normal in infants with disseminated disease. Many experts increase treatment time to 9 or 12 months because of the possible impaired immune system in children younger than 12 months. Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine is no longer recommended for infants. * Causes: M tuberculosis is a slow-growing organism, requiring 4-8 weeks for visible growth on solid medium. The organism grows in parallel groups called cords (see Image 1). It retains many stains after decoloration with acid-alcohol, which is the basis of acid-fast stains. Dr. D.S. A Clear Conscience

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Nancy Geiger One way to have a clear conscience is to live a blameless life. My application Bible says that the theme of Psalm 15 is guidelines for a blameless life. It tells us to speak truth from the heart, to not slander, to do our neighbors no wrong, to cast no slur on our fellowmen, to despise vile men, to honor those who fear the Lord, to keep our promises, to lend money without usury and to not take bribes. The Bible is full of advice about how to live life in such a way that gives us a clear conscience. Micah 6:8 tells us to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. Isaiah 56:1 tells us to keep justice and do righteousness. Isaiah 33:15 says to walk righteously and speak uprightly, to despise gain of oppressions, not accept bribes or look at evil. Why are we to live this way? 1 Peter 3:16 tells us to keep our conscience clear so that when we are abused, those who revile our good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. Romans 13:5 tells us it honors God to have a clear conscience. Also, doing so will give us peace. Isaiah 26:3 says, Thou dost keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusts in thee. Job, in all his trials, was able to say in Job 27:6, I hold fast my righteousness, and will not let go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. But, Psalm 101, even though it goes into detail about how to live a blameless life and how we should chose as our models and friends those who are godly and truthful, also admits that we cant be blameless without God. I will be careful to lead a blameless life when will you come to me? Only Gods forgiveness and the desire and determination to live rightly before God can bring a clear conscience. Psalm 32:1-5 tells us we are blessed whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. But, it also says we must confess those sins. I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord and You forgave the guilt of my sin. God gives us a way to have a clear conscience. We should strive to live a blameless life, but when we try and still mess up He can wipe the slate clean through our confession and His forgiveness. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7 There is one thing alone that stands the brunt of life throughout its length; a quiet conscience before God. 1 John 3:21 The way to make yourself count is to serve others with kindness and love.
