So, You Want To Be A Teacher?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Luis Valentino Throughout history, teaching has been considered a noble profession, where the transformation of students is not an abstract concept, but an attainable goal. And while American education is being challenged by society to prove the merits of its existence, it is truly the last bastion for students. It is through formal schooling where they acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become successful contributing members of that same, critical society. For those of you who make the choice to become teachers, across all levels, it will be the hardest job youll ever love. Let me quickly say, however, that it is also the most rewarding experience you will ever have. As you prepare to embark on this journey, it will be important that you have a number of things clear in your mind, or that you have at least spent time thinking about them. The following are a few points to consider before deciding whether this noble profession is for you: Intent. Why are you choosing teaching as a career option? Was it a life-long goal of yours, or did the decision come only after other opportunities failed to materialize, and you need a job? Is your intention based on personal experience? Expectation. What expectations do you have of yourself? Do you believe that you can perform this job well? Why? Are you out to change the world, or just your little corner of it? What expectations do you have of the profession? Do you have a real sense of what teaching entails? Commitment. How much are you willing to give to the students, the school, the community, etc.? If you are going to teach, you must have 100% commitment. Any less would not be fair to the students you have been entrusted to serve. Are you ready for such a commitment? Hope. What do you hope to contribute? How will the knowledge and skills you bring to education support your efforts? How will the profession be in a better place because of you? Understanding these points, and finding answers to their questions, will help you get you on the path. Once you have begun your journey in education, many other questions, and issues, will inevitably emerge. In fact, many of the questions and issues you will grapple with will keep you up nights. Teaching is not a job it is way of life. It has a historical context dating back to ancient Greece, thereby providing its own language, rituals, culture, rules, and temperament. Enjoy the experience. And while you are out there having fun with your students, take a moment to remind yourself that you are making a difference in their lives. 2006 Dr. Luis R. College Life

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Sharon White Many think that a college is like a cosmopolitan community where there is its own style of life, international community of thousands of students from throughout the world, special social events, room mates and class mates originated form different cultures and having different attitudes. Many young people may feel stress while thinking about their new life in college because they used to live at their homes, have their own schedules, relationships and freedoms. On one hand, college life is always attractive as it can offer a free of control and independent life where everyone is the only responsible person for his/her activities, success or failures. The dream of being independent is the exact thing which usually attracts students to leave their homes and start college life. However, there is another side which could be found as hard experience. Many young people cannot clearly understand what the freedom and independence is. College community could demonstrate them clearly their missing in clear understanding of these words meanings. Good relationships mean each person can compromise and listen to another side carefully and with respect. Independence means primary responsibility where each person is responsible for what he/she is free to choose to act or say. So choosing college life would mean taking in the responsibility for good attitudes and even behavior so that the college cosmopolitan community would seem like a friendly and encouraging society which can help in both career/professional development and personal development. The most attractive thing in college life is social events which also remain young people freedom and independence. Each college usually offers a huge amount of social life with new friends, cultures, performances, relationships. It is important to bear in mind that social life is a very powerful phenomena which can greatly reflect an adult behavior, attitudes and future career. How To Know What Sells - And Stop Leaving Money On The Niche Marketing Table

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Dr.Mani Sivasubramanian Once you have picked a niche market after careful research, you need a profit model to implement in your business. How to find the best content and products to focus on for your selected niche? How to leverage this for the greatest profit - quickly and easily? These are questions thousands of niche marketing enthusiasts are looking to answer. The easiest way - and least complex - is also essentially simple. ASK your audience. Yes, it sounds like common sense. But you would be amazed at just how few niche marketers take the logical first step before wasting time and effort playing guessing games with their niche marketing. Top niche marketers who dominate their areas have even advised making a modest cash investment and test this by running PPC campaigns specifically for the purpose of asking your audience what they want. In reality, this expense will be far less than the cost of guessing wrong! Here are some things about your niche audience you would like to know: What are their biggest problems and fears? What keeps them awake at night? What solutions are they desperately hunting for? What would they like you to do for them? Asking eliminates all guesswork. On my websites, I ask visitors for feedback and suggestions all the time. I do it on my email lists too. If I hadn’t asked members for their most important questions, I probably wouldn’t have even thought of one-half of the issues I ended up addressing. You see, once we get past a certain stage in our own marketing education, we tend to take things for granted. It is almost surprising when someone asks a question - and we remember how, just a few months or years ago, we had the very same problem ourself! Yet, we don’t think of addressing it - and in fact, that may be the problem or solution many of your prospects are desperately seeking help with. How to run these ’surveys’? You could get fancy, and use a readymade professional solution like the Ask Database. Or you could simply pop a web-based HTML-to-email form and invite your audience to send in questions and suggestions. Whichever method you use, make sure to analyze the data you receive - and take action based on the input you receive. Create a product or content addressing those very needs your audience tells you about, and you’ll have a guaranteed winner! Five Ways To Get Better Grades in College

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Chris Stout Grades arent everything, but for some people theyre the only thing. Grades are an important way to measure your success in college, but they are not the only results youre after. You need to find a way to make college personally fulfilling. You need to craft a customized college experience that really floats your boat. When you make college personally rewarding, you grades go through the roof. Here are five ways to get better grades while in college. 1. Take amazing notes You need to go to class fully prepared and ready for war. Its not enough to just sit down and absorb. You need to document all the action as it unfolds. When you take amazing notes, you learn more during and after your lectures. During your lectures, you are more aware of the information thats being presented to you, because you are processing it on two levels, one mental and one physical. After your lectures, you have a written historical account of all the ideas, dates and references that you were exposed to that day. This record can then be used for assignment execution and test preparation. 2. Bring a unique perspective to every assignment You need to strive toward originality. If you want to distinguish yourself from your other classmates, you have to bring a unique perspective to every assignment. You cant recycle old arguments and popular sentiments, you must create a new, imaginative spin. Combine multiple perspectives in a new way. Challenge something or be controversial. If you can back up your original claims with solid analysis, then youll get excellent grades on every assignment. 3. Find an ally in class You need to have at least one partner in crime for every class that you take. Target someone interesting. Introduce yourself and your intentions. Exchange phone numbers and talk about your coursework outside of class. If you can combine your know-how with someone else s bucket of accumulated information, then youll achieve better marks on your tests and assignments. 4. Get a tutor if you need to If you need some extra instruction, find a tutor. Tutors will give you a supplemental method of learning thats conversational and personally tailored to your academic needs. Work on your weaknesses. Get extra help, put in extra time and your grades will improve. 5. Choose courses that really interest you Love the courses you enroll in, or shop around for better options. Be intrigued by the material and let your curiosity take over. Discover what study method(s) work best for you. Experiment with a few different approaches, and when you find the one that fits your personality, perfect it. Work on getting betting grades, but put personal growth ahead of GPA considerations. Marketing on Steroids; Hyper Spacing the Competition in the Service Business

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Lance Winslow If you run a service company you know that when service is good that the referrals fly in faster than you can handle them and your challenge is to continually under sell and over deliver on customer expectations, but how can you continually increase the pace, size, strength and service of your company? Well believe it or not it is possible to continually expand while keeping up service and find incremental efficiency needed to move forward. No I did not say it would be easy, but it is possible and the best way to do this is to tap into those same referrals to recruit new people who will deliver at that same level. The key at this point when you have started a trend and a fad is to keep it going, keep the excitement up and turn your marketing into brand imaging and inward to team work and positive attitude. This shift is a transition that all companies cannot seem to cope with, but you must commit yourself to making it happen when you find yourself on such a wave of success. Once you turn you team into customer service maniacs you will witness a complete transformation and you have externalized your sales force to customers with word of mouth. And internalize your team into a mission of customer service. Consider this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Career Women More Prone to Divorcing Their Husband’s: Can It Be True?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Angie Lewis This cant be true! Or can it? According to Forbes magazine journalist, Michael Noer it is. He says that career women who make over $30,000 a year are more prone to divorcing their husbands because they are financially independent. This makes some sense. He also said that some of these career ladies might find someone at the office they like more than their husbands. The last reason I found extremely silly. Anyone can find someone they like better when they do not value their marriage. A housewife might find someone she likes better at the community events she attends, or at her childrens sports games, schools, grocery stores, and gym. A woman who suddenly finds someone she likes better than her husband is not committed to her marriage and that is what it all boils down to. It is a fact of life that a career minded woman is not committed to her marriage! A career woman is committed to her career. So it would go without saying that the chances are much greater that she would undervalue her husband and the sanctity of her marriage more than a woman who has decided in her heart to stay home, raise and family and be home for her husband. Unfortunately, there are less of the latter in this country. As we all know, a career woman will have a difficult time being there for her family, and pursuing her ambition at the same time. Someone is going to be left out, and it is usually the family. I dont advise a woman who is pursuing a career to get married. Its really that simple. Why get married if you arent going to be married to your husband? And I do not advise a man to marry a career woman if he expects a traditional style home and family life, because it isnt going to happen. Michael Noer was attempting to make a point but left out the root of the problem. The problem is what I constantly write about in my marriage books and articles. When couples are not devoted to the marriage in the first place, the marriage will most definitely fall on rocky times, whether the wife has a career or not. The writer also says that career women are more likely to cheat! I think this was a cheap shot. I can actually understand why this writer got a lot of flack from the feminist movement and why Forbes magazine eventually had to apologize for Mr. Noers article. Even if it were correct, he labeled the career woman in an unethical category, which we all know is not altogether true. Unfortunately people do not see the big picture for what it really is. The big picture is we live in a Godless society. Career woman or not, it doesnt matter one smidgen. The title should have read: Dont Marry a Godless Woman. Come on folks, you know that America promotes godlessness, such as adultery, divorce, and promotion of women in the workforce, so what do you expect when people do not live by Gods design and standards for marriage? People have simply made societys standards their belief for marriage and now they are complaining about it! The effect of what society does will come back and bite them on the tail every darn time and they still wont get it. Mr. Noer forgot about all the desperate housewifes out there who cheat on their husbands? My goodness, are they not just as much to blame for the wreck of the family unit as the career woman? How would you really know? Could it be that the career woman is more likely to divorce because over half of all the women in America are career women? Or could it be that career women do not have time for God in their life because they are too busy pursuing their career? Yes to both. I am all for the sanctity of marriage and family and you should be too. And that is precisely why we need to look at the big picture to understand the real reasons behind the high rate of divorce in this godless society. Putting the blame on the symptom will not make divorce go away. Listening to and applying sound wisdom and advice from above will actually mend this broken society if people would only apply its wisdom into their own marriage and life. Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness…What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?…For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. 2 Corinthians, 6:14-17 New Release! Love The Woman You Married, the companion book to Love The Man You Married. This book explores several main issues that are involved in preserving a happy and purposeful marriage, mainly the areas of submission and spiritual authority. Why are women afraid to submit to their husbands spiritual influence? Over the years, society has turned this issue into something women should fear. Submission is not about control or power like many would like to believe, but about love. Submission is love; if it were anything else than it would not be true submission. No More Desperation Dating

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Kathryn Lord When you think about what you find attractive in a person, what comes to mind? Tall, dark and handsome? Blonde and curvaceous? How about happy and fulfilled with an exciting life? I don’t know about you, but I would pick the happy, exciting life every time. While physical chemistry is important, I know quite a number of people who would not win a beauty pageant, but are so filled with life and energy that they draw the attention of everyone when they enter a room. They may not be the easiest on the eye, but they certainly are the ones I want to talk to and spend time with. ***Looking Ahead*** As we get ready for the search for our future partners, an easy aspect to overlook is our attitude towards our own lives. Each time I have found myself single, adjusting myself to the possible reality that I might be that way the rest of my life has seemed imperative. A part of that adjustment has always included building a happy and interesting life for myself. How you feel about your life now as a single person and the possibility that you might stay single, affects what you portray to others. If you hate your life, think that being married or partnered is the only valued way to live, and look towards a future as a single as depressing, sad, or bleak, believe me, that shows. And it is very unattractive. As well, that sort of mind set leads to desperation and neediness, which will really cloud your judgment when it comes to sorting through mate possibilities. How will you be able to freely decide if someone is right for you if you feel impelled to launch yourself towards the first person who shows a bit of interest? Staying centered and clear-headed is going to be vital to your future, and feeling miserable about your current life and prospects will really cloud your judgment. ***Three Action Steps*** 1. Start thinking about improving your life as a single and your attitude towards it right now. What are you proud of, and what do you need to improve upon, to feel better about your life and the future? 2. If you knew, right now, that you were going to spend the rest of your life as a single, what would you need to do so that you would have as interesting and vital a life by yourself as you imagine life with a partner would be? 3. While important to place priority on finding a mate, how can you move it to the side, and make your own life and its vitalness central? Though sounding contradictory, happiness with your life as it is now, and at the same time, making yourself ready to change it by finding a mate, actually provides needed balance. Your satisfaction with what you have will be exciting and attractive to others. You will not come across as needy, a real turn off. ***Want or Need?*** Want and need are two very different things. *Want* implies desire, but something that you could do without. *Need* has a desperate edge. Because you are looking, you will be signaling that you *want* a relationship and are willing to make space and change for that in your already full life. But you don’t *need* another to make yourself complete. One of the best ingredients for a successful relationship are two people who know how to satisfy their own needs. They are happy by themselves and not *needing* a relationship. Wanting, yes. Needing, no. University Preparation - Standardized Tests Are Failing Students

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Rebecca Garland Recently, industry experts have begun noticing disturbing trends throughout American high schools. Students, it seems, are graduating with less general knowledge and even more unprepared for college level academics than they have previously. This is especially surprising in light of new legislation requiring higher standards for graduation requirements. Schools should be churning out more qualified graduates, not less. Tracking While this enigma may seem puzzlingly, those familiar with the inner workings of education have seen this pattern emerging for years. In the past, as much as America, the land of equal opportunity, hates to admit it, students were tracked. Tracking meant that certain students were recognized as having the ability to excel in academics and were placed in classes designed to meet their needs and challenge these intelligent students on a regular basis. Students whose intelligence was below average or who simply chose not to perform at their ability level were given opportunities where they could succeed in their own right. Courses designed for apprentice level work or skill building such as machine shops and work-study programs offered a chance to streamline the educational process to meet the needs of these students without the pressures of coursework that frustrates and often bores them. Equal Opportunities Over time, these career-based programs have faded away and been replaced with remedial core content classes designed to prepare students for the standardized tests required for graduation. The monetary rewards tied to high performance on standardized tests by the government have caused many schools and teachers to shift focus from the high-achieving students onto the low-performing students in hopes of bring up that set of scores. While this is admirable, it is important to realize the standardized tests students are working so hard to pass indicate college readiness. If students can pass the test, they are ready for college level work at least according to the state agencies creating the tests. This is fundamentally flawed for various reasons: Test Timing One of the basic problems with the standardized tests and college readiness is that the test does not assess all high school learning. Many graduation level standardized tests are taken in the beginning or middle of a students junior year of high school. Even if the student passes, there is at least another year of high school unaccounted for. The tests are given early, by the way, to ensure students have up to six or seven attempts to pass the problem with college readiness this presents does not require further clarification. Test Content While the many of the tests are designed to assess students higher level thinking skills, the tests fall dismally short of the mark. Current standardized tests are remedial at best. Each year the states lower the standards to ensure a certain percentage of students are passing, and some tests require less than 60% to pass. If a student gets slightly more than half of the questions correct, they are apparently ready for college. Test Rationale The most fundamental of all problems with the state assessments is the rationale behind them. If all students must take and pass the test to graduate, and the test indicates college readiness, then all passing students should be ready for college. While this is a fantastic principle, the truth is less than a third of graduating seniors are even interested in college. And only two-thirds (if that) of the students who start even finish work at the University level. While there is nothing fundamentally wrong with standardized testing, and everyone agrees that no child should be left behind or refused a chance to excel, the system that has evolved in education today does bear further examination. Should the bulk of teacher energy go toward teaching students test passing strategies instead of training these students in fields of interest or use? And what of those bright students who should be setting the standard? Unfair For All The current system, despite its intention of equality is unfair for all students. The low students are not able to focus on useful, practical educational directives. The man-power and energy of teachers that should be focused on actually preparing college-bound students is almost exclusively being directed at preparing students for a test that serves them no practical purpose. Even worse, in many states, bright students are thrown back into classrooms with low and average learners in hopes that these gifted students will inspire and assist the lower and middle children into becoming model students. They spend much of their academic careers preparing for a test that is not even remotely challenging for them. It is obvious that this is completely unjust and essentially ensures that no students, not even the brightest, are truly prepared for college. American Boarding Schools Few avenues are left for parents pursuing the best educational opportunities for their gifted students, and the best of these are American boarding schools. The programs at many American boarding schools are designed exclusively for helping hard-working, bright students reach the highest possible achievement levels. American boarding schools have documented success with preparing students not only to succeed at the university level, but also to excel at level far beyond the capabilities of their peers - graduates of traditional education programs. I’m Mad as Hell and I Refuse to be an Advertising Victim

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Keith A. Lee I stopped being an advertising victim in 1992 when I was first introduced to Dan Kennedy Marketing, and it is one of the most important lessons Ive learned. Im happy to say I havent been an advertising victim for 13 years. If you have been in business for awhile, it has already happened to you - probably more than once. In fact, probably often. And if you are new to the retail world, you can bet the mortgage that it will eventually happen to you. What is it? It’s when you get that big black checkbook out of the center desk drawer, and you sit down across from some media salesperson, and you write out some kind of a check for some amount, for some kind of promotion advertising expense, and you have no earthly idea whether you made a good decision, bad decision, when you’ll know, how you’ll know, if you’ll know. I detest that kind of uncertainty. I don’t like to play guesswork games with my money and I bet you don’t either. I’m going to tell you how to eliminate it, how to make every dollar you spend on advertising and marketing measurable and accountable. The Best Place To Spend Your Hard Earned Money On Advertising Is Direct Response!! All advertising can be one of only two types either “Institutional Advertising” or “Direct Response Advertising.” It is monumentally important to understand the difference. Most advertising in magazines, newspapers, on radio, TV, and billboards is institutional advertising. It is Institutional advertising because in most cases, there is no way of accurately tracking response. Most advertising agencies like institutional advertising since, without tracking, they canNOT be held responsible for zero results. If an ad campaign does not produce the results they want, they blame it on: 1. The economy 2. The weather 3. You didn’t run the ad often enough 4. YOU (your merchandise, your service, your image, etc.) You Can’t Deposit Creativity In The Bank Unfortunately, most advertising agencies are interested In being creative and cutesy. That’s what wins advertising awards. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. The advertising field gives awards based on creativity, not results. Many ads that have won top awards didn’t produce any substantial increases in sales. Direct response advertising, on the other hand: 1. Contains a headline that flags your prospect and creates curiosity 2. Creates interest in the merchandise 3. Creates desire in the prospect 4. Has a specific offer 5. Has a deadline 6. Has measurable results Why is this so important? Two reasons: 1. Most businesses have limited capital to spend on their marketing and advertising (unless you are Coca Cola or Microsoft). Since you have a limited budget, why waste it on advertising that you are not sure is working? 2. The only reason a business would advertise is to get more customers and sell more merchandise. A direct response ad concentrates only on this purpose. First, it contains a headline that attracts the attention of the specific customer you want to in your store(s). Then, it makes a complete and compelling case for the reason for your offer. Next, it proves to the customer that the reason for the offer will solve some problem in the customer’s life or provide some valuable benefit to him. It states specific reasons, facts, and statistics, as well as testimonials from other customers to validate the claims. Then it tells the reason why you are able to make such an attractive offer. It tells the customer what to do in order to gain the benefits of the offer. It creates “urgency” by telling the customer that he must act now in order to gain these important benefits, and why this offer is so limited, either by time, or by the quantity available. Finally, it must contain a way for you to track exactly what sales or customers were generated by that particular ad. Now that I have defined for you the difference between institutional and direct response advertising, here’s the big question that you have to ask yourself before you make every future marketing and advertising decision. Does the advertising that you are considering meet all six of the criteria that I outlined above? If is doesn’t, then pass on it as quickly as you can say: “I’m Mad as Hell and I Refuse to Be an Advertising Victim Again!” Keith Lee, owner of American Retail Supply headquartered in Kent, WA became president of the business in 1981 and later bought the business from its founder Dick Thompson. Although Lee credits much of their growth to increased product offerings and what he calls the best client service in the industry, he attributes the companies Herculean increase to the discovery of the world renowned Marketing Guru, Dan Kennedy. Make Your Own Dad or Mom Gifts

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Kadence Buchanan Whether their birthday is quickly approaching or Father and Mother Day are holidays you prefer to forget due to your inability to find something which can be a valuable present, a gift that you will craft yourself and will portray your own personal touch can go a long way into their hearts. Here are some easy craft ideas for those capable to open your computer and put it to work. - Personal Music Compilation: You have heard them one thousand times. That Frank Sinatra song they were dancing last Christmas is engraved on your brain and you are catching yourself singing the lyrics every time you see a couple that resembles them crossing the street. One of the most appreciated gifts you can easily construct is that of a music CD containing all their favorite songs. You can even create the CD cover and labels on your computer and your gift can have a personal touch that will make tears fall from their eyes as they open the wrapping paper. Add a romantic photograph of them on the cover, put their theme song first and last, arrange the music according to their pleasing, and think of a good song that they do not know but will love when hearing. Improvise as much as you can and you will be glad you did. - A Box Full of Memories: Last summer they have decided to visit Spain, but their tickets, photographs, beach shells, and museum passes have been inside a bag since then. Surprise them with a “Box from Spain.” Arrange their favorite photographs and create on your computer a collage that will cover the sides of the box. Print and place the year and their favorite Spanish phrase, which they have been using since, on top. Place the tickets and passes on a transparency paper and glue them inside the box, organize the box according to days or places, and try to create the box you would like to receive. Give them a chance to travel back in time and smile to your ingenuity. - A Photograph Album: The photographs they have been eager to take every summer are scattered around or placed in boxes that nobody has time to open up and see anymore. Visit your local art or bookstore and purchase a couple of albums that can host most of the pictures you know they cherish. Arrange the pictures in chronological order or just grab them from the box and place them in the album while adding your own comments or imaginary dialogues. You can also create the album yourself on your computer and bind the pages together with string and ribbon. Embellish the photograph albums with your own taste, like black and white copies of photographs and experience how it feels to have something truly valuable given to them. - A Card Box: They are always searching those small pieces of paper with those old recipes or sports scores on them, which seem to have disappeared since you remember yourself. They are always complaining and thinking they are now really old and incompetent for not remembering where they have placed their favorite cards the last time they used them. Save them the trouble of trying to locate their “valuable” pieces of paper and create a box which can have a title and display their favorite colors. Add some paper labels inside and give them the chance to feel organized and prepared when the time to use them again comes. Creating the perfect gift for dad and mom is not that difficult. It needs some imagination and time to invest. We know you got both; you know it too. Good luck and happy crafting times!
